Volunteer in Ghana!

About Thrive Africa

Thrive Africa is a not-for-profit UK based charity, using the efforts of volunteers to deliver its projects. We aim to assist in the development of  education in schools and communities across Africa. We believe everyone deserves an equal opportunity; and our projects aim to fulfill this belief.

Our projects are carefully planned and executed, we aim to make each project self sustainable by the school or community it is in.

You’ll be able to find out more about us by browsing our website.

Provide the solution and solve the problem, teach the solution and stop the problem occuring.

Current Projects

We are currently working with Nkawie and Nahinee, Ghana, Education Districts. Assisting in the development of  educational resources available to students in schools, carrying out improvements to school infrastructures and building libraries.

Sending over 40,000 books a year to Ghana with our partner Book-Cycle we aim to provide students with libraries which cater for their every need and inspire them in their education. The libraries offer students an environment in which to study, complete homework and further their interests in non-curriculum subjects.

The books are used by students of all ages, teachers and the local community, with the aim to increase the knowledge of the user.

Project BaseSet in a quiet neighbourhood on the outskirts of Kumasi, it’s safe, well situated and welcoming. With a huge Mango tree in the front courtyard providing fresh fruit and plenty of open space, you’ll find it easy to relax on an evening in the 6 Bedroom, 3 bathroom project house.

You’ll find plenty of space for socialising with a 40ft living room, large dorm rooms and inside/outside dining areas.

The compound is surrounded by large walls and security gates to prevent any access from unwanted guests and the house has several security features.

You’ll be sharing a room with up to 6 people, theres safe storage and the house has water & electricity (2 prong plug).

The kitchen provides all the tools necessary for preparing any snacks you may want and our on site chef will be preparing you meals 3 times a day from here.

Tourist Opportunities

Ghana is a fantastic place to explore while volunteering, full of national parks, castles, rainforest, lakes, museums and various cultural attractions.

Evening can be spent taking in the local culture, music and food, while weekends can be spent walking over the roof of the rainforest, watching elephants or kayaking across lake volta.

And when volunteering is coming to an end why not relax on one of Ghana’s many beaches? With crisp white sand, palm trees, coconuts and a beautiful ocean.

There’s certainly nothing boring about Ghana and we’ll be there to help you make the most of your time.

Our Work

Last year we built six libraries and you can see the full story in pictures here.

Volunteering

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding experiences, you’ll take away memories that will last a life time. Its a full time experience 5 days a week, up to 10 hours a day with travel, time off is given on evenings and weekends and there’s plenty of things happening in the local area and further afield.

With plenty of tourist attractions in Ghana we’ll allow adequate time for you to visit these. The accommodation at project base will be keep you and other volunteers entertained on evenings and has all the amenities you’ll need.

You’ll be accompanied at all time by Thrive Africa project managers and have plenty to do on project sites.

Volunteer Criteria

We ask that volunteers work 5 days a week on their chosen projects, for up to 10 hours per day (including traveling time). Allowances will be made for trips to tourist attractions on weekends which may take more than 2 days.

It’s not always easy on projects, especially when its hot, we won’t be pushing you to your limits and you’ll have plenty of time to relax if you get tired, but we do ask everyone to work as a team to complete tasks.

Any previous skills of working with a hammer and nails will come as an advantage but you’ll take part in orientation before each project.

Anyone with experience or an interest in teaching, sports and/or building will get plenty of opportunities to put their skills to use.
